PC-BOD

The PC-BOD™ is designed to automate the 5 and 7 Day BOD analysis method approved for use in many countries around the world. Use of the PC-BOD™ will enable laboratories to conform to the following regulatory Norms:

Standard Methods 5210B, 21st edition
Standard Methods 5210B, 20th edition
DIN EN 1899-1
DIN EN 1899-2

With this product release Man-Tech continues its innovative trend of software based, flexible automated solutions for environmental laboratories. The powerful PC-BOD™ software is flexible enough to be set-up to the protocols required by any laboratory, but simple enough to be used on a daily operational level by technicians. The Man-Tech innovation of Autorun Buttons has been fully utilized in the PC-BOD™ software.

PC- BOD™ SA

The PC-BOD™ SA (Stand Alone) System is designed for the laboratories that have limited numbers of samples. The benefit is the COMPLETE BOD analysis software and the importance of data integrity and correctness of the results. In addition, there is a simple upgrade path to add an autosampler.

The PC-BOD™ SA System includes the following interface

Additional options available include:

The various PC-BOD™ SA System Configurations are described below.

Man-Tech does not expect that customer on-site installation will be required. Man-Tech will provide distributors with videos and documentation allowing endusers to install and operate this system without distributors being on-site. We expect some telephone or web support during the installation period and first few runs.

The PC-BOD™ SA offers the additional benefit of being upgradeable by adding the autosampler and required pumps to make an independent automated PC-BOD™ measurement system. This is very important for laboratories investing in the PC-BOD™ SA software solution now with the capability for an upgrade to a fully automated PC-BOD system in the future.

PC-BOD™ SA may be connected to an existing PC-Titrate™, AssayPlus™ or TitraSip™ SA System

The PC-BOD™ SA employs the traditional Man-Tech interface and may be combined with a PC-Titrate™, AssayPlus™ and TitraSip™ SA System. PC-BOD™ and PC-Titrate™ software packages may reside on the same computer and operate independent of each other (they CANNOT be operated simultaneously). This means that a laboratory with a PC-Titrate™ System may purchase the PC-BOD™ SA package for BOD analysis capabilities from the same computer and interface. This is specifically designed for laboratories with limited sample numbers (NOTE: see key technical items below).

There are a few key technical items to note:

1. The PC-BOD™ SA is a Stand Alone system. If this is connected to a PC-Titrate with autosampler, the PC-BOD™ SA CANNOT be used with the autosampler. It resides beside the system and bench space is allocated for it.

2. PC-Titrate™ and PC-BOD™ software is installed on the same computer

3. While PC-Titrate is operating/analyzing, you CANNOT analyze with PC-BOD™ and vice versa.

4. While PC-Titrate™ is operating/analyzing, you CAN in PC-BOD™

a. Review and re-process data
b. Set-up timetables, methods and schedules

5. PC-BOD™ and PC-Titrate™ software cannot be in operation/analyze mode at the same time. In summary, both software packages cannot communicate through the interface at the same time.

An example of a laboratory that will invest in this capability (PC-Titrate™ with PC-BOD™) is a typical inorganic environmental laboratory with a PC-Titrate™ TitraSip™ System for pH, conductivity, alkalinity and turbidity. This laboratory may be running BOD/CBOD’s manually using a rudimentary excel sheet or a simple BOD application commonly offered by some meter companies for data entry/capture. With the inexpensive PC-BOD™ SA add-on to the Man-Tech interface, they now have the complete, powerful PC-BOD™ analysis software. They will immediately notice the peace of mind gained from this package and will appreciate its ease of use.

PC- BOD™SA Software

The PC-BOD™ software will have the look and feel of the PC-Titrate™ software with many functions being the same. There are a number of critical operational differences and these can be learned through Man-Tech videos and/or training sessions.

Main Screen
Main Screen has the innovative Man-Tech Autorun buttons. In addition, the technician/chemist can very quickly view all final runs that are due today including the time they are due at.

Click the Autorun button to begin…

Timetable Entry Screen
In most cases, customers will have their standard BOD templates already created. The PC-BOD™ software has the ability to pre-define sample sets based on customers, sample types, starting protocols, blank-seed-standards, etc. and quickly load/append to build the complete timetable to run at a specific time.

template blank

Timetable with Blanks and Seed Samples
Note that BOD and CBOD seeds are mixed together in this timetable. The “Is CBOD?” column lets the software know what type of analysis is defined for the seed, standard or sample (BOD versus CBOD). If the entry is NO, it is a seed for regular BOD samples. If the entry is YES, then the seed is for CBOD samples (samples with nitrification inhibitor added). The YES and NO entries are normally saved as part of the timetable for simple load/append functions. However, if there is a change, it is very easy to edit the entry.

Timetable with Append Checked
To quickly build a timetable, simply check the “Append to Timetable” circle, select the Timetable to add and click “OK”.

Click Start…
Click the “Start” button and the software prompts you for the rack number that the bottles are located in. This is very important for maintaining data and bottle integrity. Once measured, this entire rack will be place in the incubator.

Calibration In Run
The first step in a BOD analysis is the Autocalibration. This requires that a bottle with 1” of water be in bottle position #1 (if defined in this manner) and then follow the on-screen instructions. This is normally done only once during each batch, but can be repeated as often as required during a run.

The OK button reads, “Is bottle with 1” of water in #1 position”. This is a reminder button to remind the technician/chemist about the calibration bottle.

Click “OK” and the autosampler moves the BOD probe to the calibration bottle for a percent method calibration based on air saturation.

Initials Real Time Table
In this table you will notice the first sample is “calib” for the autocalibration. The volume columns are filled in with the actual volumes added as the reagents are added in real time.

final before reset

Finals
In this screen, the finals have been run, but not “Locked”, they are “unlocked” allowing the chemist to re-measure the sample(s) if there was a flag or other concern. You will notice that the initials have been “Locked” since they were measured 5 days previous and cannot be measured again. Re-measuring initials can be completed on day 1 before they are “Locked”. The new value is saved and the batch results re-calculated. Simply double click on Reset cell for the sample(s) to be re-measured, click start and the system will re-measure only those sample selected. The new DO measurements are saved and used for the BOD/CBOD calculations.

Post Run
In the post run, a completed batch may be loaded and re-analyzed with different calculations (for example Standard Methods versus EN/DIN). The re-calculated results are not saved, but they can be printed for a report.
